In 1864 Carl-Johann Gottlob Thieme founded a porcelain and antique shop engaged in the decoration of porcelain.  In 1872 he established the porcelain factory Sächsische Porzellan-Fabrik Carl Thieme zu Potschappel.  In 1972 the company was nationalized, operating as VEB Sächsische Porzellan-Manufaktur Dresden until it was reprivatized in 1991.
