    Description

    A BRAND NEW OFFERING
Vintage Delta wood lathe countershaft upgrade
This is a complete kit to convert the manually oiled OEM bronze bushing carriers to precision ball bearings.
The vintage Delta #1460 12” wood lathe was available with a countershaft located on the lower shelf.
This countershaft was comprised of two bushing support castings, two cast bushing blocks, a ¾” diameter shaft, and two step pulleys allowing for a total of 16 speed options for the lathe.
Several other Delta wood lathes used a similar countershaft.
If you wanted to add the countershaft to your direct drive lathe, the Delta p/n was 46-864.
The bronze bushings were press fit into a cast carrier block.
The carrier block is bored in two locations and stuffed with felt trimming that the rotating shaft rubbed against.
The operator was to repeatedly apply oil to soak the felt in order to keep the shaft lubricated at each of the two openings in each of the two carriers. This was obviously a time consuming and messy way to insure the system was properly maintained with lubricant.
One photo shows the OEM felt stuffing and the bushing carrier it was removed from.
We realized there was a much better solution than the manually oiled felt-stuffed bushing carriers.
Our solution……. lubed-for-life precision ball bearings!!!
We designed a ball bearing carrier that directly bolts into the shaft support towers and allows all of the same shaft and v-belt tensioning adjustments as did the OEM cast carriers.
The OEM cast carrier and bronze bushing unit at each support is replaced with a CNC machined billet aluminum bearing holder.
Each bearing holder is preassembled with a disc spring, a high quality double sealed precision ball bearing, and a zinc plated retaining ring.
The bearing holders are spot ball milled on one side and slotted with a ball mill on the opposite side allowing for slope of the shaft, if that positioning is required to tension the v-belt at each pulley.
Both ball bearing units are identical.
We include custom machined stainless steel bolts and jam nuts to replace the OEM adjustment bolts at top and bottom of each support tower.
The bolts are machined with a radius on the end to fit into the ball milled locations on the bearing carrier.
Either one, but not both, of the two bearing carriers needs be locked in location on the shaft.  To do this, we have include zinc plated and stainless steel hardware to corral one of the bearings in its desired location on the shaft.
On one side of the fixed bearing, we add a stainless washer and clamp collar.
The stainless washer is a spacer between the bearing and clamp collar so that the bolt on the collar can be accessed past the front of the bearing holder.
On the other side of that same bearing, we add two stainless steel washers, a zinc plated spring, and another clamp collar.
The spring is compressed before the clamp collar is tightened to trap the bearing in location on the shaft.
If room is available on your specific countershaft, the bearing locations can be fixed by simply using one stainless steel washer and one set collar at each bearing if the bearings are installed to face each other.
However, we suggest the bearings be placed on the right side at each carrier and the use of the collar and spring locating parts as described, to enable the countershaft to be easily slipped out to the right side direction without disassembly, if the v-belt trapped between the towers needs to be changed.
The total number of parts that come in the conversion kit are shown in the photos.  Photos also show the completed assemblies in position at each support tower.
The simple bolt-in installation of this upgrade is easily accomplished and provides a substantially better performing countershaft unit, with no further maintenance required.
